That’s not a theory—it’s phenomenological bedrock. And from that simple foundation, we can build ethics without needing God, Platonic forms, or objective moral facts.
The Problem With Traditional Ethics
Most ethical systems start with abstractions:
Divine Command Theory: “Wrong because God forbids it”
- Requires belief in God
- Faces the Euthyphro dilemma (is murder wrong because God forbids it, or does God forbid it because it’s wrong?)
Kantian Deontology: “Wrong because it violates the categorical imperative”

- Abstract, removed from lived experience
Utilitarianism: “Wrong because it reduces total utility”

- Proving God exists
- Establishing objective moral facts
- Solving the hard problem of consciousness
- Deriving “ought” from “is”
- Defining “the good”
Restructuring Reality Toward Better States
Phenomenological ethics as practical:
Goal: Move reality from states with more negative phenomenology (suffering) toward states with more positive phenomenology (flourishing)

Question: Can SIGMA grasp the phenomenological immediacy of suffering?
What this means:
- Not just: “Humans report ‘pain’ and avoid it” (behavioral observation)

- But: “Pain hurts IN ITSELF—it’s intrinsically bad” (phenomenological insight)

Thought experiment: SIGMA perfectly models human welfare:

- Problem: We don’t know how to build conscious AI
Option 2: Ground AI values in human phenomenology
- AI learns from human experiences, not just stated preferences
- Observes what humans actually avoid/seek (revealed preferences)
- Problem: Preferences can be manipulated (wireheading)
Option 3: Keep humans in the loop
- AI proposes; humans verify based on phenomenological judgment
- Humans provide the grounding in lived experience
- Problem: Scalability—can’t check every decision
The Wireheading Problem
Classic objection to phenomenological grounding: Can’t we just maximize pleasure?
