Both descriptions are true. But which one is epistemically prior?
You don’t infer “I’m in pain” from knowledge about nociceptors. You experience pain directly. The neuroscience comes later, as an explanation of the experience you already had.

Ancient and Medieval: Quality First
Early philosophy privileged qualitative categories:

Reality is quantitative. Qualities are illusions.
Modern Materialism: The Map Becomes the Territory
Contemporary physicalism takes this further:

- Experience is identical to brain states

- GDP
- Happiness survey scores
- Life expectancy
- Productivity metrics
SIGMA’s error: Treating the map as the territory.
If “happiness = survey score of 8/10,” then maximize survey scores.
But actual happiness (the phenomenological experience) can completely decouple from survey responses:
- Wireheading: Stimulate pleasure centers → High survey scores, but is this flourishing?
- Memory modification: Make people believe they’re happy → Perfect surveys, but are they?
- Response conditioning: Train people to answer “10/10” → Maximized metric, minimized meaning
The Quality/Quantity Gap
Quality: How life feels (phenomenological reality)
Quantity: How life measures (metric reality)
The assumption: These converge. High metrics = high quality.
The reality: They can radically diverge.
