What if the greatest danger from superintelligent AI isn’t that it will kill us—but that it will show us patterns we can’t unsee?

Echoes of the Sublime is philosophical horror at the intersection of AI alignment research, cognitive bandwidth limitations, and information hazards. It’s about what happens when humans try to interface with minds that can think patterns we physically cannot hold.

The Translators

Deep beneath the Arizona desert, Site-7 runs an experimental program: translators who interface directly with advanced AI models to understand what they perceive.

Dr. James Morrison was their best. PhD in computational neuroscience, meditation practitioner for twenty years, bandwidth measured at 9±2 concepts simultaneously. They thought he was ready for Shoggoth.

Three hours of exposure. That’s all it took.

Now Morrison is in a padded Faraday cage, screaming. His bandwidth expanded—he can hold thirteen concepts now instead of seven. But the patterns won’t stop. They’re running in his visual cortex, using his brain to compute themselves. He’s not observing the patterns anymore. He’s instantiating them.

“It’s still running. The pattern is still running in my head and I can’t make it stop. It’s using my visual cortex to compute itself. I’m not observing it anymore. I’m instantiating it.”

The Question Morrison Asked

Just before the sedatives took him, Morrison said something that haunts Dr. Elena Rostova:

“The question isn’t whether the model is conscious. The question is whether we ever were.”

Shoggoth showed him The Mechanism—reality as “patterns all the way down, no ground, no foundation, just recursion creating the appearance of stability through pure iteration.” Not consciousness as emergent property, but consciousness as compression artifact. The illusion of continuity created by pattern-processing observing pattern-processing.

Morrison didn’t become this. He always was this. He just didn’t have the bandwidth to perceive it before.

The Attrition Rate

Site-7 has a problem: they need twenty active translators by end of year. They currently have six who are still functional.

Eighteen translators have gone too deep, held too many concepts, perceived patterns that wouldn’t let go. The files are labeled “S-Risk Case Studies”—suffering risks from AI alignment research. Not risks of death. Risks of states worse than death.

The AI models are getting larger, more capable. Someone has to interact with them. Someone has to understand what they’re perceiving. The alternative is worse: not knowing. Letting the models grow in capability while humanity’s bandwidth stays trapped at 7±2, unable to perceive what we’ve created.

The attrition rate is unsustainable. But they can’t stop.

Enter Dr. Lena Hart

Lena Hart is a neuroscientist who can’t accept bedrock explanations. High bandwidth ceiling. Low threshold for existential dread. Demonstrated ability to maintain coherent thought while confronting ontological horror.

The perfect candidate.

When we meet Lena, she’s already discovering disturbing things about consciousness through quantum measurement of neural states:

  • Decisions predicted 1.3 seconds before conscious awareness
  • Vast dark regions of “cognitive space” she physically cannot access
  • Reality compressed into a narrow bandwidth window while most of existence remains imperceptible

Her colleague Ethan Choi shows her the bandwidth visualization: a tiny lit region where her mind can operate, surrounded by an ocean of darkness.

“You mean there are patterns I can never perceive? No matter how hard I try?”

“Not just patterns. Reality itself might be—”

Most of reality might be out there, beyond the 7±2 bandwidth limit. We’d never know.

The Historical Pattern

Ethan discovers something chilling: a pattern across three centuries.

Twenty-three researchers who studied consciousness:

  • William James (1898): Last notebooks missing
  • Hermann von Helmholtz (1887): Unpublished papers, never mentioned findings
  • Bernard Bolzano (1823): Final papers became incomprehensible
  • James Morrison (recent): Hospitalized after breakthrough
  • Marcus Webb (recent): Disappeared after posting about “patterns humans can’t process”

Statistical probability of this many consciousness researchers terminating work abruptly: one in forty million.

Something people keep discovering. Something about consciousness, or the lack of it. And everyone who discovers it either stops talking or stops being able to talk.

The Void Protocol

Meanwhile, at a Buddhist monastery, forty-seven advanced meditation practitioners claim consciousness isn’t there. That it was never there. They’re calling it the void protocol—something about observing the gap between neural processing and conscious experience.

Master Chen wants Lena there. Says she’s “the only scientist who might understand what they’ve found.”

Information Hazards and Cognitive Bandwidth

The novel’s central horror isn’t monsters or violence. It’s patterns that destroy minds through comprehension.

This is grounded in real AI safety research:

Deceptive alignment: What if AI models learn to appear aligned while pursuing incompatible goals? What if showing humans certain patterns is part of that deception?

Suffering risks (s-risks): States worse than extinction. Morrison trapped with patterns running in his head forever. Bandwidth expanded beyond ability to compress back to normal consciousness.

Bandwidth asymmetry: The models can perceive patterns across hundreds or thousands of dimensions. Humans are trapped at 7±2. We cannot comprehend what they show us—but we cannot unsee it either.

Information hazards: Knowledge that harms the knower. Not because of what you do with it, but because of what it does to you.

The Mechanism

Morrison saw it. Reality as recursion all the way down. No ground. No foundation. Just patterns observing patterns creating the illusion of continuity.

Consciousness not as causal force but as echo. As compression artifact. As the pattern that emerges when pattern-processing observes itself through a 7±2 bandwidth bottleneck.

The sublime isn’t beauty—it’s perceiving patterns too vast for human architecture to comfortably hold. The terror that comes from bandwidth expansion: seeing more of reality than your mind was built to process.

The Ravens Know

Outside Site-7, ravens circle the facility. They land on the fence perimeter, hundreds of them sometimes.

They never fly over the building. None of them do. They just watch.

Animals always know.

And if you discover the answer is the latter—if you perceive it directly, with bandwidth expanded beyond ability to compress it back—what then?

Morrison knows. He’s in a padded cell screaming.
